| | | | | | | | Initial Assessment The main goal of this individual consultation is to help a client (and members of his/her family) evaluate the potential effect of the Buteyko Method on his life. In order to determine this, it is important for the Buteyko specialist to measure the client's breathing and learn his health history. During this consultation, the teacher also briefly explains the theory of the Method to the student. Furthermore, this consultation gives the student an opportunity to ask questions about the Buteyko Method. It also helps the student and the teacher become familiar with each other, which is important if the student decides to continue working with the Method. The Initial Assessment is a prerequisite for taking the main instructional course - Buteyko Method and Lifestyle. We suggest that at least one parent or guardian be present during a consultation with a child. For an adult consultation, a significant other is welcome to participate (free of charge). Buteyko Method and Lifestyle
The Main Instructional Course
This course is divided into two parts: Breathe Less and Lifestyle. Both parts contain 5 sessions each and are taken simultaneously. This means that a student has a 2 hour session (one session of Breathe Less and one session of Lifestyle) approximately once a week. The schedule could be adjusted to match individual needs of a student. Part I
When K. Buteyko was asked to explain his method in two words, he said Breathe Less! The Buteyko Method is based on the discovery that the cause for asthma, allergies and many other health issues is "overbreathing" or hyperventilation. By understanding the theory of the method, applying its specific health measurements, and doing breathing exercises, the symptoms of illnesses, as well as the illness itself, can be reduced or eliminated. In general, the student becomes much healthier and more capable of living a longer and more productive life. This course offers the knowledge of Buteyko's discovery and the experience of his method. A participant spends approximately half of each session doing breathing exercises. Since this is an individual course, the teacher is able to adjust them to the specific needs of the student. The usual outcome of the course is a normalization of the student's breathing patterns, which greatly improves not only his breathing, but functions of his metabolic and immune systems. After the completion of this course, the student will be able to measure and correct his breathing in daily life in order to become healthier and prevent diseases. If a client is taking medicine, we do not recommend dropping it or changing its dosage; however, after this course, clients often find that medicine is no longer needed. In any case, please consult your doctor regarding your medicine intake. Part II Buteyko was convinced that about 150 of most common and dangerous diseases of our civilization are actually symptoms of one disease—hyperventilation. Normally, there is more than one reason that makes a person hyperventilate. Combined, these reasons become a lifestyle inviting various physical and mental problems. Unfortunately, this lifestyle is now widespread. So, how to stop hyperventilating and establish a lifestyle which supports health and longevity? Buteyko left us a teaching on this subject as well as a way to measure what effect different events or objects have on a person's health. During this course the student will learn how to apply these discoveries. Since this is an individual course, the teacher is able to help the student analyze his current lifestyle and the major causes for his hyperventilation. When this is determined, the student can start creating a plan for establishing a lifestyle that promotes well-being for his body, mind and spirit. Diet, physical exercises, sleeping arrangements, speaking behavior, work and relationship issues, spiritual and religious involvement, and others important issues will be greatly discussed during this course. You might think that recommendations of Dr. Buteyko regarding a healthy life style are same as those of many other doctors. No! Often they are greatly unpredictable and different compared to common medical beliefs. Prepare to be surprised! This course is for adults and children (9 years and older). If a child is taking the course, we ask at least one parent to participate with him (no additional charge). Buteyko in Motion
Individual Course
Buteyko in Motion is a series of one-on-one sessions, which will teach you how to use the Buteyko breathing during phisical activities. Many forms of exercise are covered, from physical fitness training in a gym, to running, biking, hiking or walking outdoors. Whether you are in excellent shape or just starting a physical fitness program, these breathing techniques will greatly increase your stamina and endurance. At the moment, this course is only taught in person, at our Woodstock, New York, location.

Psychological Counseling

This course is a series of psychological consultations, or psychological clearing. We find that, occasionally, during the process of Buteyko work, some psychological issues may rise to the surface. Issues that impact your stress level thereby impact your health, so it is very helpful to work through them. This five-session process, psycho-educational in nature, deals with those issues. It involves a short-term modality that identifies the conflicts in order to clear away these past issues. This is not a long-term intensive process; the goal is to identify toxic thoughts and memories, so that they can be transformed.
This also provides a safe and confidential space to explore general issues, if you choose, and develop a counseling relationship. In addition to being a Certified Buteyko Method Specialist; Thomas Yakovlev-Fredricksen, M.S.; C.A.S.E. holds a Master’s Degree in Community Mental Health as well as a Certification of Advanced Studies in Education in the field of Counseling Psychology. Thomas is a graduate of The Johns Hopkins University Graduate School and has worked in various positions in hospital settings as well as in his private practice. With over 20 years of experience, he is able to help you move forward with your life in a caring and gentle, yet effective, manner.

Guided Breathing Practice is available for people who have completed the Buteyko Method and Lifestyle course or the Natural Breathing Cure Weekend Workshop. It is one hour of breath-work combined with relaxation. This is a chance to clarify certain nuances of the breathing exercises, as well as receive assistance in modifying your exercises as you progress. Some people benefit greatly from one to two hours of Guided Breathing Practice each week. Just as in a gym, it is easier to maintain discipline and achieve greater results when you exercise with a personal trainer. This program is offered online (via Skype) or in person. 3. Personal interview with A. Novozhilov, M.D. (Medical Director of Clinica Buteyko, Moscow, and the co-patent holder of the Buteyko Method)
4. Personal interview with L. Buteyko, Ph.D. (Director of Education at Clinica Buteyko, Moscow, andthe co-patent holder of the Buteyko Method) This course gives a future Buteyko Specialist “hands-on” experience in the specific process of educating on the Buteyko Method as taught by Clinica Buteyko and the Buteyko Center USA. This program is helpful for future Buteyko Specialists who wish to work “side by side” with an experienced Buteyko practitioner, as well, and especially, for those who have never been involved in the Healing Arts/Counseling. This program also offers the unique opportunity to clarify the details of the Buteyko Method with its patent holders, (and legally the authors of the method) L. Buteyko and A. Novozhilov. This program is optional and not required for participation in professional trainings.
